Norton Carnegie, Alexandre Augusto, and Nizar Chahbani Earn All-ECC Honors for Mercy Men's Soccer
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Three members of the Mercy College men's soccer team have been named All-East Coast Conference (ECC), the league announced on Sunday. Norton Carnegie (Kingston, Jamaica) was named to the First Team, while Alexandre Augusto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earned Second Team honors, and Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) earned a spot on the Third Team.
Carnegie, a junior defender, was a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week selection. He was a key part of a Mercy defense that posted three shutouts and allowed just over one goal per game. Carnegie helped hold down a potent Dowling offense in a slim 1-0 defeat, and shut down top scoring threat Gerald Jones of St. Thomas Aquinas as Mercy registered a 1-0 shutout in ECC play. He also chipped in on offense, scoring the game-tying goal with only 3:18 to play in regulation, and helped hold Molloy without a shot in either extra period in the Flyers' 2-1 double-overtime road win.
A senior midfielder, Augusto led the team in scoring with four goals and ranked second with nine points. He scored the game-tying goal on a penalty kick in a come from behind 2-1 win over NYIT, and netted two goals in a 3-0 win over Wilmington, including the game-winner. He finished his career with 52 points in 54 games, scoring 17 goals and collecting 18 assists. It marks the third straight year that Augusto has been an All-ECC selection as he earned a First Team spot as a junior after being named to the Second Team as a sophomore.
Chahbani led the team with 10 points, scoring three goals and recording a team-best four assists. The junior midfielder tallied all three of his goals in conference play, including the game-winner versus NYIT. He also assisted on the game-winner at St. Thomas Aquinas.
Mercy finished the year with a 6-5-3 overall record and a 3-2-3 mark in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, good for fifth place in the league standings. The Flyers closed out the year by going 2-0-2 in their last four outings, playing to a scoreless tie with C.W. Post, ranked No. 20 in the nation, in their season finale on Monday, October 23.
Head Coach Chris Gonzalez will return 13 letterwinners from this year's squad in 2007, including nine starters.
