Mercy College Men's Soccer Takes Post University, 2-1
WATERBURY, CT - The Mercy College men's soccer team, ranked No. 8 in the region, defeated host Post University by a score of 2-1, on Thursday, October 19. Mercy is now 6-5-2 overall, while Post dropped to 7-5-5.
Mercy got on the scoreboard early, as sophomore forward Quaison Carter (Teaneck, NJ) scored an unassisted goal in the 11th minute.
The Flyers added what would be the game-winning goal at the 63:09 mark, when junior forward Kevin Gray (Kingston, Jamaica) connected with sophomore forward Omar Bowen (Montego Bay, Jamaica), who broke free and found the back of the net.
It looked as though Mercy would record a shutout, bu with only 10 seconds left in the game, a Post attacker was taken down and the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick. Junior Teidor Maleshkov (Haskovo, Bulgaria) converted the attempt, to bring the score to 2-1.
Mercy goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made six saves to record the win.
Post held a 22-9 advantage in shots, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks in the contest.
"We played a nice game today," said Mercy head coach Chris Gonzalez. "It was probably the best we've played all year and it's nice to see things really coming together at this point."
Mercy will close out the regular season on Saturday, October 21, at home versus C.W. Post, beginning at Noon. The Flyers will honor their seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
