Flyers Play to 1-1 Draw with New Haven in ECC Men's Soccer

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's soccer team played visiting New Haven to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday, October 17.  The host Flyers are now 5-5-2 overall, and 3-2-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) action.  The Chargers moved to 5-9-2 overall and 4-2-2 in league play.

The two teams competed through a driving rain from the opening kick-off through the second overtime period. Neither team could put much together on offense until New Haven's John Nolan (San Antonio, TX) converted a rebound off a save in the 66th minute that gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead.  Mercy's freshman goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) first stopped a shot by Justin Fernandez (Hanson, MA), but the ball carried straight out to Nolan who was waiting about 10 yards out.

Just over six minutes later, Mercy evened the contest at 1-1.  Sophomore Quaison Carter (Teaneck, NJ) fired a corner kick to the middle where junior Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) found a space and snapped a header past New Haven goalkeeper James Hilaire (Stamford, CT).

Both teams had a handful of opportunities at the end of the second half and in the extra frames, but could not convert. Mercy held a 17-12 advantage in shots, and 9-4 in corner kicks. Spence finished the contest with three saves for Mercy, while Hilaire stopped four shots.

"This was a hard-fought, scrappy game that had a playoff feel," said Mercy head coach Chris Gonzalez. "Our guys played with a lot of intensity and never quit."

Mercy will be back in action again on Thursday, October 19, at Post University for a non-conference game.  The Flyers will then close out the regular season on Saturday, October 21, at home versus C.W. Post beginning at noon. Mercy will honor its seniors prior to the game.
