Mercy Men's Soccer Ties Bridgeport, 2-2
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Mercy College men's soccer team tied host Bridgeport, 2-2 on Saturday, October, 7. Mercy's record is now 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. Bridgeport currently is 3-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the ECC.
The first goal of the contest came in the 16th minute by Bridgeport's LeRoux Lothian (Kingston, Jamaica). Avichay Alkotzer (Rishon Letzion, Israel) took a corner kick for the Purple Knights and Lothian headed the ball into the back of the net.
Mercy was able to tie the game at the 50:10 mark. There was a scramble in front of the net and freshman Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) converted for the Flyers. Mercy was able to score again about twenty minutes later. Junior Kevin Gray (Kingston, Jamaica) scored on a rebound off Bridgeport's goalkeeper, Chris Clarke (New York, NY), putting the Flyer's up 2-1.
With less than three minutes remaining in the contest the Purple Knights were able to even the score. Bridgeport's Blaise Njie (Banjul, Gambia) passed the ball from about 15 yards out to Paulo Goncalves (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), who converted tying the game at two goals apiece.
Neither team was able to convert in the two overtime periods. Freshman goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) finished with seven saves for the Flyers and Clarke recorded two stops for Bridgeport.
"It was an exciting game and the team played tough," said head coach Chris Gonzales.
Mercy will be back in action again on Wednesday, October 11, at home versus Holy Family. Kick-off is set for 3:30 pm.
