Fourth-Ranked Dowling Holds Off Mercy Men's Soccer 1-0

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Morten Jensen (Tananger, Norway) scored a first half goal that proved to be the game winner as No. 4 Dowling defeated host Mercy College by a score of 1-0, in an East Coast Conference (ECC) men's soccer match on Saturday, September 30. The Flyers dropped to 4-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in ECC play, while Dowling improved to 11-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in league action.

With the contest still scoreless in the 32nd minute, Mercy was called for a foul just outside the top of the box.  Jensen lined up and fired a direct kick around Mercy's wall that found the lower right corner.

Mercy picked up some pressure in the second half, but was unable to threaten with a shot on goal.  Dowling finished the contest with a 13-3 advantage in shots.  Freshman goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) recorded five saves in the game for the Flyers. Dowling goalkeeper Nemanja Veljovic (Belgrade, Serbia) made one stop.

"It was a tough loss, but I'm very proud of these guys," said Mercy head coach Chris Gonzalez. "We stuck to the game plan and hopefully we'll be back to see them again in the playoffs."

Mercy returns to action on October 3, at Concordia in another ECC match.  The Flyers' next home contest is on October 11, versus Holy Family at 3:30 p.m.
