Frimpong-Manso Goal Lifts Mercy Men's Soccer Over STAC 1-0 in ECC Opener

THEILS, NY - Sophomore forward Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana) scored his third goal of the season to give the Mercy College men's soccer team a 1-0 triumph over host St. Thomas Aquinas College in the Flyers' East Coast Conference (ECC) opener on Tuesday.  Mercy, ranked No. 9 in the Northeast Region, improved to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.  St. Thomas Aquinas fell to 3-3-2 overall.

It was a physical contest that remained scoreless until the 72nd minute.  Playing short-handed, Mercy's Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) served a ball from about 30 yards out on the left side and Frimpong-Manso beat the goalkeeper and a defender with a head touch that found the goal and would be the difference.

Mercy held an 11-9 edge in shots for the contest. Senior goalkeeper Nicholas Evans (Kingston, Jamaica) made three saves for the Flyers, while Sean McEnery stopped four shots for St. Thomas Aquinas.

"It was a very hard fought game," said Mercy head coach Chris Gonzalez. "I thought we controlled play well and it was a great touch by Michael."

Mercy is back in action on Wednesday, September 27, at Molloy in another key East Coast Conference matchup.
