Augusto Scores Twice as Mercy Men's Soccer Blanks Wilmington in Home Opener 3-0

          DOBBS FERRY, NY - Senior midfielder Alexandre Augusto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) scored twice and freshman midfielder Santiago Riera (Valhalla, NY) added another goal to lead the Mercy College men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of Wilmington in the Flyers' 2006 home opener.  Mercy, ranked No. 10 in the region, improved to 2-1 on the year while Wilmington dropped to 3-3.

          Augusto got Mercy on the board in the 15th minute, converting a feed from freshman midfielder Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) after an indirect kick. Riera gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute, as he connected on a header off a corner kick delivered by Mohammed Diallo (Bronx, NY). Augusto added an insurance goal in the 88th minute, burying a cross in front from junior back Issiaka Sow (Bronx, NY).

          Senior goalkeeper Nicholas Evans (Kingston, Jamaica) and Carl Spence split the game in net to combine on the shutout.  Evans made one save in the first half and Spence stopped five more in the second frame. Junior Dan Mangat (Newark, DE) made six saves for Wilmington. Mercy out-shot Wilmington 21-16.

          Mercy returns to action on Saturday, September 9, with another non-conference game at the University of D.C. The two teams met on August 26, in West Chester, PA, with the Flyers coming out on top, 2-1.
