MacSpadyen Posts Team-High Five Points as No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Hosts No. 7 NYIT for Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 29, 2017) – Despite a team-high five points from sophomore Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College), the No. 12 Mercy College men's lacrosse team dropped a 16-11 decision to ECC foe No. 7 NYIT on Saturday afternoon in their regular season finale on Senior Day at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game Head Coach Jordan Levine recognized seniors Nick Rjedkin, Joseph Kelley, Nathan Korutz, Kevin McNally, Daniel Speicher, Richie Morris and Nick Wilcox.

The Mavericks (11-4, 7-1 ECC) will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ECC Tournament and will host No. 3 seed Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, May 3rd in a Semifinal matchup at 3 p.m. The Bears (12-3, 8-0 ECC) win the regular season title and will host No. 4 seed LIU Post in the other Semifinal game on Wednesday, May 3rd.

MacSpadyen had a goal and four assists, while sophomore Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and freshman Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had two goals and an assist. McNally and junior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) scored twice and Speicher and freshman Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) added goals. Sophomore Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 14-of-17 on faceoffs and had nine ground balls. Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made ten saves to take the loss.

NYIT was led by George Schultz who had a game-high four goals, while Tom Hughes had two goals and five assists. Alex Seltzer made six saves to earn the win.

Mercy looked to secure the program's first-ever regular season conference championship, but NYIT opened the contest with two of the first three goals to take a 2-1 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter. Martinez scored for the Mavericks during that stretch and McPartland added two consecutive goals to put Mercy ahead 3-2 at the 2:36 mark. Matt Chanenchuk scored with less than a minute left in the frame to even the score up at 3-3 after one quarter.

McNally opened the scoring in the second quarter to give the Mavericks a 4-3 lead. Leroy Halftown netted a goal to make it 4-4 before Mercy responded with four straight goals to take an 8-4 lead. MacSpadyen started the rally and was followed by goals from McNally, Cortese and Martinez.

NYIT came back with two straight to get within two, 8-6, before Chillianis scored right before halftime to give Mercy a 9-6 lead at halftime.

Chillianis began the second half with another goal to increase the Mavericks lead back to four, 10-6, but the Bears continued to battle and ensued with two goals in a row to bring the score to 10-8. Speicher went on to score to make it 11-8 with 8:58 remaining in the third quarter. The NYIT defense would step up and hold Mercy scoreless the rest of the way and the Bears rattled off eight straight goals to earn the win.

NYIT held a 47-25 edge in shots, while Mercy held a 31-26 edge in ground balls and won 22-of-29 faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will host No. 3 seed Chestnut Hill College in an ECC Semifinal matchup on Wednesday, May 3rd at 3 p.m.
