DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2014) – Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y. / Seton Catholic Central) scored a career-high seven goals and added two assists to tie his career mark of nine points in leading the Mercy College men's lacrosse team to a dominant season-opening 18-4 victory over Alderson Broaddus University on a cold and rainy Friday afternoon.
Mercy starts the season 1-0 for the fourth time in the program's five-year history while Alderson Broaddus begins the spring at 0-1.
Wood went to work early, scoring three goals and assisting on another in the first quarter and adding three more scores midway through the second period as the Mavericks took a commanding 8-0 lead into halftime. The veteran tallied his seventh goal just one minute into the third quarter before calling it a game.
Once Wood left the field, Alderson Broaddus fought back into the mix with a man-down goal at the 10:23 mark, but Mercy rattled off another six straight goals before the end of the third quarter, including three scores in the final 1:48. Both teams managed three more scores apiece in the final quarter, with the Battlers' final strike courtesy of a man-up opportunity.
The Mavericks dominated every aspect of the matchup, outshooting the Battlers 54-18, winning 21 of 26 faceoffs, forcing 27 turnovers while committing just 12, grabbing 53 ground balls to the Battlers' 27 and successfully completing 8-of-9 clears vs. 10-of-17.
Freshman Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y. / Seaford) scored twice and assisted on two more goals in his collegiate debut while sophomore Connor McLachlan (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) added two goals and an assist of his own. Graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y. / Univ. at Albany) scored once and assisted on one goal while going a perfect 12-of-12 on faceoffs and grabbing a team-high five groundballs. Seven other Mavericks found their way onto the scorers' sheet – freshmen Keith Jefferson (Riverhead, N.Y. / Riverhead), Chris Lopez (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) and Richie Morris (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) and juniors Zack Haun (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca East Senior) and Lucas Sarmiento (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Suffolk County CC) via goals and juniors Joseph Lopopolo (New Rochelle, N.Y. / Herkimer County CC) and C.J. Fleming (Middletown, N.Y. / Herkimer County CC), sophomore Thomas Lackaye (Summit, N.J. / Summit) and freshman Erik Larson (Loudon County, Va. / Loudon County) on assists. Sophomore Peter LoParo (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) led the defensive unit with a team-high five turnovers.
Senior Mike Cashman (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) improved his career record to 8-1, making four saves against five shots on goal in 44:51 minutes in the cage. Sophomore Justin Seltzer (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Demarest) and freshman Joe Arcidiacono (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) made three combined saves in just over 15 minutes.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will look to build on their victory as they host Ohio Valley University (0-3) on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 12:00 p.m.
