Men's Lacrosse Edges Past Pace, 8-7
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2012) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Mercy College men's lacrosse team climbed one game over the .500 mark with an 8-7 victory over Pace University at Pace Field. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 6-5 overall, while the Setters fell to 5-9 on the season.
After Pace jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, the Mavericks responded with four straight goals in the first quarter. Junior attacker Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored two of those four, while sophomore midfielder Patrick Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.J.) and junior midfielder Erik Grady (Medford, N.Y.) had the other tallies.
The Setters made the affair an interesting one in the second period as they outscored Mercy 3-1. Junior midfielder C.J. Fleming (Middletown, N.Y.) notched the lone goal for Mercy as the Mavericks headed into the intermission ahead, 5-4.
At the 13:26 and 11:23 marks in the third quarter, Pace scored and took a 6-5 advantage. With 5:48 left before the final period, senior midfielder Craig Blom (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) found the equalizer for Mercy.
Twenty-two seconds into the fourth quarter, Pace took the lead right back. However, the Mavericks weren't done with their offensive answers yet. With 5:32 remaining in the fourth, Blom netted his second goal of the contest. Then, incredibly, six seconds later Marzocca received a feed from junior midfielder Blaze Yeager (Riverhead, N.Y.) and fired it past the goalkeeper to put Mercy ahead, 8-7.
In total, Marzocca finished with the hat trick, while Blom had two goals and one assist. In goal, junior netminder T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded 20 saves.
