Men's Lacrosse Battles ECC-Rival C.W. Post; Falls, 8-6
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2012) - On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College men's lacrosse squad received a five-goal output from junior attackman Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.), but it was ultimately not enough as East Coast Conference-nemesis C.W. Post defeated the Mavericks, 8-6, at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 4-5 overall and 2-5 in the ECC. Following the loss, the Mavericks slipped to 5-4 on the year and 4-3 in the league.
The first 10 minutes of the opening quarter did not see any scoring as each goalkeeper held the opposing offenses at bay. At the 5:10 mark, C.W. Post drew blood first to take a 1-0 lead. About 30 seconds later, Marzocca found the equalizer. With one minute remaining in the first period, the Pioneers scored again to take a slight 2-1 advantage.
The second quarter was the same story as C.W. Post scored twice and Mercy found the back of the netting once. This time it was Mavericks' senior attacker Sal Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y.) who scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Patrick Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.J.). Heading into halftime, C.W. Post held a 4-2 lead.
Marzocca struck for two more tallies in the third quarter to counter the Pioneers' three goals. One of those goals by Marzocca came man-up. After three quarters, Mercy trailed, 7-4.
After C.W. Post's Keith Rodriguez scored his fifth goal of the day at the 10:22 mark of the final quarter, Marzocca scored his final two markers of the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as C.W. Post won 8-6.
For Mercy, junior goalkeeper T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) stopped an incredible 20 shots in the cage.
For C.W. Post, goalie Tim Bradley made 15 saves in net. On faceoffs, the Pioneers were successful 16 out of 18 times.
Head Coach Steve Manitta and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, April 21 when they travel to Greensburg, Pa. to take on ECC-opponent Seton Hill College at 1:00 p.m.
