Mercy's Jesse Wood Named ECC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week

Mercy College men's lacrosse standout Jesse Wood was named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for the period ending March 28. It is the first time a Maverick earned this honor this season.

Earlier this season, sophomore T. J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) was the Goalkeeper of the Week twice, while junior Sal Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip/Suffolk C.C.) was the Player of the Week once.

The entire release can be found here.

Wood, a freshman out of Seton Catholic in Binghamton, had another strong week, finishing with five goals and two assists. Against Pace, an 11-7 win, he had one goal and one assist. Against Wheeling (W. Va.) Jesuit, three of his four goals came in the second quarter as Mercy broke the game wide open.

For the season, the talented freshman is tied for the team lead in goals with 17, and leads the team in both assists, with 19, and total points, with 36. Additionally, he is third on the squad in groundballs with 21.

Nationally, he is ranked third in the nation in points per game with 4.83, while his 2.83 assists per game is the fourth highest average in the land.

Throughout the season, Wood has been blogging about his experiences as a college freshman. The blogs can be found here.

Earlier today, Mercy (7-1, 3-1 ECC) was ranked #8 in the latest USILA Division II Coaches Poll. The Mavericks have now been ranked four consecutive weeks. In all, five of the top nine ranked teams in the country hail from the ECC.

This week, Mercy plays only once, travelling to the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio, for a Saturday matinee with Lake Erie College.
