DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College assistant men's lacrosse coach Jordan Levine helped give his second-seeded Toronto Nationals squad a 10-9 victory over the top-seeded Denver Outlaws in Sunday's Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Championship game at Annapolis, MD.
Levine, who was selected to play in the MLL All-Star Game earlier this season, picked up three ground balls and played a key role on defense, helping to hold the league's top ranked offense in check. The Outlaws were up to the task defensively and took a 9-8 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The advantage lasted until the 10:30 mark when Shawn Williams knotted the contest at 9-9 on a feed from Jeff Zywicki. Williams then broke the deadlock with only 45 seconds remaining and gave the Nationals the crown in their inaugural season.
"It feels good to have all of our hard work pay off," Levine said. "As a first year team we had a lot of highs and lows this year. Winning five straight to close it out, culminating with the MLL Championship, is very gratifying. It all came together for us this weekend."
Levine is a 5-foot-8 midfielder in his first season with the Toronto Nationals after playing the 2008 campaign with the New Jersey Pride. He registered 10 points on seven goals and three assists this season. Two of his tallies were game-winners for the Nationals. Levine will now get some time off before the start of his indoor National Lacrosse League season where he plays with the Philadelphia Wings.
Levine joined the staff at Mercy College in November of 2008 as assistant men's lacrosse coach and assistant to the athletics director. He assists with the day-to-day operations of the program and coordinates recruiting with Steve Manitta, the program's first head coach, as they prepare for the inaugural season in 2009-10.
