Mercy Men’s Lacrosse Falls to #3 Mercyhurst, 17-4
The Mercy College men’s lacrosse hung tough for the first
30 minutes of the game, but were eventually overwhelmed by the
third ranked team in the country, Mercyhurst College, 17-4.
The Mavericks fall to 1-5, including 0-2 in the East Coast
Conference, while Mercyhurst improves to 5-0, and 3-0 in the ECC.
For Mercy, the star was freshman goalie T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), who played brilliantly, making 18 saves, including several from point-blank range.
In the opening quarter, Mercyhurst jumped out to a two-goal lead, before Alex Martello (Montville, N.J./Montville) put the Mavericks on the board. After 15 minutes, The Lakers led 2-1.
Just one minute into the second quarter, Mercyhurst expanded its lead to 3-1, on Michael Sciulli’s first of his four goals on the day. Then, Mercy freshman Sean Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 3-3 with 10:25 to go in the period. Once again, DiCarlo made several big stops to keep the score tied, but eventually Mercyhurst broke through once again, and led 4-3 at the half.
The second half, though, was a different story. Mercyhurst scored six unanswered goals in the third, and scored seven more times in the fourth. Wallin added his third of the game in the final period for the 17-4.
Mercy next hosts Dowling on Wednesday, March 24, at 4:00 p.m. at SUNY Purchase.
