A Week of Firsts

A Week of Firsts

March 29, 2010

The past weekend was filled with many firsts for Mercy College men’s lacrosse team.  Early Saturday morning we all got on the bus for our fist college overnight road trip.  By 9 am we were on our way to West Virginia, the bus ride was long a solid 8 hours or so.  We passed the time by watching some Syracuse and Albany lacrosse games along with The Hangover and Any Given Sunday.  The ride down seemed to fly by and before we knew it we were getting off the bus in West Virginia…. Almost the middle of nowhere.

Coach gave out our room assignments and we all unpacked and explored the nearby shops and gas stations.  We then killed time watching the NCAA tournament games until we had to go out for a team dinner.   At 7 we all got on the bus once again to go out to eat.  Coach found us a place to eat, Cheddars.  Once they cleared an area big enough for us all to sit, we finally got to sit down and eat dinner.

After dinner we went outside to get on the bus and go back in but the bus wasn’t in the parking lot.  Alex Martello and James Bugeya went out to search for the bus and found it down the road at Wal-Mart or some place near it.

Then we all went back to the hotel and had a meeting with coach then were let lose to relax before it was time for bed.  A few of us ventured down to the pool and got to relax in the water for the first time since the end of last summer.

With an early morning wake up around 9:00 for a team breakfast and some more lacrosse videos we discussed our plans for the game in the coming hours.  After breakfast we went back to the rooms to pack up and leave the hotel.

On the bus again headed for the game we all watched a few more lacrosse games, Syracuse’s run to the championship game in 2008 with the intention to watch and learn from one of the best programs in the country.

After the short ride to the field we were ready for the game, however this weekend it was a warm rain and not a freezing cold rain like two weeks earlier.

During the game everyone played very well, both the defense and the offense played together as a unit and limited most of the mistakes on the field.  In the end we came out with our first ECC win over Wheeling Jesuit, along with this Anthony Vigliotti scored his first goal also being the first long pole to score in mercy college history.  Also members of the offense put up big numbers, Frank Henenlotter led the team with four goals.  This was a great win for us and now we are looking to carry our success into this week’s game and through the rest of the season.
