Steve Kelly will be entering his 11th year as the head coach of the Flyers. Coach Kelly is an experienced coach who is working to advance Mercy's basketball program. In just his second season at the helm, the Flyers posted an 11-14 overall mark, making them one of the surprises of the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. In the 2000-01 season, Mercy's 10-15 record was good enough to earn the team's first conference tournament berth in six years. After a subpar showing the following season, the Flyers rebounded to once again hit double figures in wins in '02-'03, narrowly missing a return to the NYCAC tourney. After a tough season in '03-04, Coach Kelly's squad once again rebounded to post a .500 record in conference play, and their 12 victories were the most in his tenure. Kelly is a 1969 graduate of Fordham University and entered the collegiate coaching ranks in 1980 at Dominican College. In his nine year stint at the helm, Dominican posted five winning seasons and failed to reach double figures in victories just once. Coach Kelly has been rewarded for his coaching prowess, being named NAIA District 31 Coach of the Year for the 1985-86 season, and he also received the NIT/MIBA Division II Coach of the Year award for the '88-'89 campaign.
