VALHALLA, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2017) – Despite a game-high 16 points from senior William Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nyack College) and a double-double from junior Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered a 71-66 setback to Roberts Wesleyan College in an ECC matchup on Tuesday night at Westchester Community College.
The Mavericks (2-22, 0-15 ECC) drop both meetings to the Redhawks (3-21, 2-13 ECC), who snapped a ten-game losing streak with the win.
Robinson added four rebounds and went 6-of-7 from the foul line, while Kozul finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Graduate student Ryan Hickey (Smithtown, N.Y./Dowling College) netted 13 points and four rebounds on 6-of-13 shooting and senior Raphael Jennings (Washington, D.C./ASA College) posted 11 points on 5-of-8 from the field.
Roberts Wesleyan was paced by Manny Joseph who nearly recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Mavericks and the Redhawks were tied at 10-10 with 12:54 remaining left in the opening half. The guests followed with a 15-4 run to give themselves a 25-14 lead with 8:10 left in the frame and looked to have all the momentum.
However, Mercy continued to fight and went on a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to three, 26-23, after a Robinson layup at the 4:15 mark. Roberts Wesleyan built the lead up to five, 32-27, but the Mavericks ended the half on a 5-1 run to head into the locker rooms down just one, 33-32.
The second stanza saw the Redhawks come out on a 14-4 run to increase their advantage back to 11, 47-36, with 15:58 remaining. The visitors held a 49-38 lead at the 15:06 mark before Mercy showed they were up for the challenge and ensued with a 13-0 run to take a 51-49 lead with 11:17 left in the contest.
The Mavericks maintained a 61-60 edge with 4:03 on the clock after an Amir Atkins (Alexandria, Va./Hagerstown CC) layup, but Roberts Wesleyan would not go away and answered with four straight to take the lead back at 64-61 at the 2:50 mark. Mercy got within two, 66-64, with 42 seconds left after a Hickey layup, but Dwayne Roberts scored a basket on the other end to increase the lead back to four, 68-64, with 31 seconds left. After an offensive foul on the next Mavericks possession, Zack Panebianco went 1-of-2 from the foul line after drawing a foul to make it a five-point game, 69-64. Time would run out on Mercy in their hopes of a comeback victory.
Mercy shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the floor, 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from downtown and 50.0 percent (8-of-16) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 39.0 percent (23-of-59) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc and 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the charity stripe. The Redhawks held a 43-42 edge on the glass, while the Mavericks held a 23-18 edge in bench points.
