Lee Notches Double-Double for Men’s Basketball in ECC Loss to University of D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 18, 2012) – On Wednesday, the Mercy College men's basketball team received its best performance of the year out of sophomore forward Jordan Lee (Englewood, N.J.) as he recorded the game's only double-double, but fell to the University of the District of Columbia in East Coast Conference action in Washington, D.C., 90-58. With the victory, the Firebirds improved to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Following the loss, the Mavericks dropped to 1-14 on the season and 0-6 in the league.
Mercy managed a strong first half as with 6:23 remaining, the Mavericks trailed the juggernaut offense of the Firebirds by just eight points (28-20). The guests achieved points 19 and 20 on a dunk by junior forward Joseph Pope (Akron, Ohio), who led the Mavericks with 14 points tonight.
Mercy kept up with UDC as the Firebirds scored seven points, while the Mavericks netted six, to close out the opening stanza. At halftime, UDC led, 35-26.
The Mavericks came out of the intermission firing on all cylinders as they tied the game with 14:58 left. Senior forward Kortney Parker (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) nailed a jumpshot to changed the score to 40-40. Unfortunately, the momentum ended there as the Firebirds reeled off 11 straight points to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the duration of regulation.
Mercy received 12 points and 10 rebounds out of Lee, while Pope was one rebound off from notching himself a double-double (14 points, nine boards).
For UDC, junior guard Brandon Herbert (Baltimore, Md.) poured in 27 points, while fellow junior guard Nigel Munson (Washington, D.C.) scored 20.
Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks will look to forget about this loss very quickly as they travel to Delaware tomorrow to square off against Goldey-Beacom College in non-conference action. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
