Mercy Men Fight to Finish Against Dowling
OAKDALE, N.Y. -- Mercy College lost a hard fought 74-67 men’s basketball game today at Dowling College. Mercy remains in eighth place in the East Coast Conference with a 1-14 record (1-21 overall), while Dowling remains in sixth place at 6-11 (8-16 overall).
Four Mavericks scored in double-digits, led by Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who scored 17, and Bryan Van Cott (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay), who contributed 15. Hasaan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Iowa Central CC) added 12, while Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlon) poured in 10. Van Cott added 10 rebounds to lead the club.
The teams traded the lead several times during the first 20 minutes, when Van Cott scored his 10th point to give Mercy the lead with 1:18 to play. A pair of Dowling free throws with 22 ticks to play gave Dowling the lead at the break, 35-34.
In the second half, Mercy built a four-point lead on a Garcia jumper with 16:50 to go. Dowling was able to turn the tide with an 11-0 run over the next five minutes, taking a 50-43 lead. Mercy would rally back to take a tenuous one point lead at 53-52 on a pair of Powell free throws, only to have Dowling recapture the lead on its next possession. It would prove to be a lead Dowling would never relinquish.
Mercy concludes its three-game road trip on Wednesday, February
10, with a game at C.W. Post at 7:00 p.m.
