Powell Scores 18, Mavericks Outscored 99-69 By Dowling

Hasaan Powell.

Junior-transfer earns Mercy’s second regional honor of the week.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Junior college-transfer Hasaan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Iowa Central CC) tallied 18 points during Wednesday’s 99-69 loss to ECC-Rival Dowling at Mercy College Gym. Powell shot 5-for-10 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the charity stripe en route to his second double-digit performance of the week.

Aiding Powell were four other Mavericks with double-digit performances. Junior swingman Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), junior guard Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Monsignor Scanlan), and rookies Bryan Van Cott (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) and Tyler Jones (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) each had 10+ points. Van Cott and Jones each had 10, while Garcia sunk 15 and Wilson added 12. Of the four, Jones had the best shooting effort with 3-for-7 from the floor, 2-for-5 from the 3-point line and 2-for-3 from the foul line. Garcia was one rebound away from a double-double.

With the loss, the Maverick fall to 1-14 overall and 1-7 in the East Coast Conference. The Dowling Golden Lions advance to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in conference.

Turnovers and board presence were the deciding factors in the game as Dowling scored 28 points off Maverick baubles and 15 points from second chance points. The Golden Lion bench scored 37 points to the Mavericks’ 12.

Van Cott got the Mavericks on the board early, opening the game with a trey dished by junior Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham). The Golden Lions took charge and came back to take a 10-point lead, 17-7 in the next five minutes of action. The Mavericks cut it to four, 17-13, with a Wilson-jump shot set up by Van Cott at 13:33. A layup and free throw by Wilson at 12:42 cut the lead to three, 19-16, following a layup by Dowling senior forward Josh Lowe. The Mavericks kept it close as the two teams traded buckets with Dowling just keeping a steady lead. Another 3-point, layup and one from Jones cut the Golden Lions’ 8-point, 29-21, lead to five, 29-24, with 6:04 remaining in the half.

Dowling came back strong as the Mavericks missed opportunities down the stretch to allow the Golden Lions to take a 40-29 lead going into halftime.

After the break, Mercy College couldn’t get it started as Dowling extended their lead to win 99-69.

For the Golden Lions, senior guard David Seagers (Bronx, N.Y.) led the team with 27 points. Junior guard Sean Smith (Copiague, N.Y.) added 15.

The Mavericks are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 16 with the last of their three-game East Coast Conference homestand. Mercy College will play C.W. Post at 2 p.m. at Mercy College gym.
