Powell Named Division II East Regional “Star of the Report”

Junior College-transfer earns Mercy’s second regional honor of the week.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Junior College-transfer Hasaan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Iowa Central CC) was named NCAA Division II East Regional “Star of the Report” on Tuesday, Jan. 12, following his career-best 27-point performance on Monday which led the Mercy College men’s basketball team to their first win of the season and ended their 43-game losing streak. The Mavericks defeated NYIT, 89-88 for a East Coast Conference victory.

Powell, a transfer from Iowa Central Community College, shot 12-for-22 from the field, 1-for-1 from the 3-point arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Powell added seven rebounds, three assists and four steals in 36 minutes.

His take away from NYIT’s Dominic Scurry with 21 seconds left in regulation led to a fastbreak layup to put the Mavericks ahead by four, 85-81. Four free throws later kept the Mercy men in the lead to secure the long-awaited win for the Mavericks.

Powell and the Mercy College men will look to repeat themselves on Wednesday, Jan. 13, when they host Dowling at 7 p.m. at Mercy College Gym.
