SPARKILL, N.Y. – Maverick rookie Bryan Van Cott (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) led the Mercy College men’s basketball team with 15 points on Wednesday night at Aquinas Hall against St. Thomas Aquinas College. With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 0-12 on the season and 0-5 in league play.

Van Cott shot 6-for-14 from the floor and was 3-for-10 from the foul line. Van Cott also led the Mavericks in rebounding with eight, two shy of a double-double. He was backed by junior transfer and fellow first year player Hasaan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Iowa CC) who posted 14 points over the Spartans. Powell was a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.

Maverick junior Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, Mass./Raynham) added 11 points to the Mavericks’ game total.

The Mavericks came back and cut the St. Thomas Aquinas lead to two points, 20-18, with a jumper from junior Desentrie Allen (Bridgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral). The Mavericks continued to hang with the Spartans and tied the score at 24-24 with a layup under the basket by junior Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Monsignor Scanlan) with 7:38 remaining in the period. The Spartans slowly pulled away and were able to put an 8-point gap between the teams, 35-27 at the half.

The Spartans kept the momentum in the second period and finished the game ahead 77-57.

The Mavericks will continue their road spin as they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y., to take on the Molloy Golden Lions at Quealy Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 9. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m. following the women’s basketball team’s East Coast Conference mix up at 1 p.m.
