Garcia Leads Mavericks In First Game Of New Decade At Clancy Tournament

Mavericks lose 73-49 to Dominican College, Garcia nets 13 points.

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Mercy College men’s basketball team opened the new decade at the Fourth Annual James Clancy Tournament hosted by Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y., held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center on Saturday. In game two, Queens College defeated Caldwell College.

Junior Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) paced the Mavericks with 13 points and eight rebounds. Tyler Jones (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) came off the bench to net 11 points and six boards, while Bryan Van Cott (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) scored 10 points.

Mercy jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first half but Dominican charged back with eight straight points to take a 12-8 lead. The Mavericks held a 31-26 lead with 2:28 to go before the intermission but Dominican came back with five points to tie it up at 31-31. A layup from Jones ended the first half with the Mavericks holding the 33-31 lead.

Dominican opened up the second stanza with a 13-1 run as senior forward Zach Huston (Binghamton,
N.Y.) netted eight of the points to give DC a 44-34 lead with 14:19 on the clock. The Chargers stayed hot in the second half and never lost the lead as they went on to the 73-49 victory.

With the victory Dominican improves to 7-6 overall, while Mercy falls to 0-10 on the season.

The Mavericks will play Caldwell in the third game of the tournament on Sunday, Jan. 3. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m.
