BRONX, N.Y. – The Mercy College men’s basketball team opened their season with a competitive match up against Division I Fordham University on Thursday, playing in an exhibition game on the Rams’ Rose Hill Gym court. Despite the 97-43 loss, the Mavericks out shot the Rams in 3-point field goals in the first half. The outing was the first for the Mavericks, who enter the 2009-10 season under first year head coach Sean O’Connor.
Junior Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) back in his hometown of the Bronx, led the Mavericks in scoring with 10 points, going 4-9 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from the 3-point arc. Freshmen Bryan Van Cott (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) and Tyler Jones (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) was second in scoring with seven points.
Mercy beat out the Rams in offensive rebounding, scoring seven second chance points to the Rams five.
Fordham was led by freshman Chris Gaston (Newark, N.J./St. Anthony (New Hampton)), who scored 27 points with 17 rebounds. Gaston shot 12-17 from the floor and 3-6 from the charity stripe.
The Rams went on a 11-0 run to begin the first half. Garcia’s 3-pointer from Hassan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Iowa Central CC) broke the Fordham run and got Mercy’s first points on the board. Jones sunk a three of his own from Garcia to shorten the Fordham lead to seven, 13-6. A layup by Van Cott at 6:44 broke a four-minute, 8-1 Fordham scoring run, to make the score 30-15. At the half, the Rams led 53-23.
In the second half, Garcia was the first to score for the Mavericks with a short jump shot in outside the lane to make the score 55-25. A long ball from Jimmy Gunville with 6:51 remaining gave the Mavericks 40 points.
Fordham posted 20 of its 97 points off free throws as the Mavericks tallied 29 fouls to the Rams’ 19.
The Mavericks will continue with its tour of Division I schools in the Bronx when they face the Manhattan Jaspers of the MAAC on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. in Riverdale, N.Y.
