Mavericks Men’s Basketball Fall to C.W. Post

The Mercy College men’s basketball team lost to C.W. Post 95-65 in a Valentine’s Day matinee at the Pratt Recreation Center. Five Pioneers scored in double figures, as the hosts have now won 40 consecutive games at home.

The Pioneers improve to 18-5 overall and 14-3 in conference play, while Mercy falls to 1-23 overall, 1-16 in the ECC.

Freshman Tyler Jones (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the Mavericks with a career day, as he pumped in 22 points in 26 minutes off the bench. He made eight of his 16 shots.
Mercy continued to play without Hasan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Iowa Central CC), who has been sidelined with a lower body injury.

C.W. Post jumped out to a 13-0 lead to open the game, only to have Mercy hit three consecutive jumpers by Bryan Van Cott (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay), Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), and Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham ).

The game would hang around a ten-point lead for most of the half, until the Pioneers extended the lead to 16 at the break.

In the second half, C.W. Post scored eight straight to extend the lead to over 20 points, a barrier that would never be challenged for the remainder of the game.

Garcia would finish with 17 points, while Gunville would tally 11. Van Cott would grab a game-high 14 rebounds.

This is the second game in as many days for Mercy. This contest was originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 10, but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Mercy next plays on Wednesday, February 17, when the Queens College Knights visit the Mercy College Gymnasium.
