Penmen Squeak by Mercy College Men's Basketball 71-65
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College men's basketball team was edged by Southern New
Hampshire by a score of 71-65 on Saturday.
Senior guard Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY)
recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. He was also
7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Ed Wilson
(Bronx, NY) scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Sophomore guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) added
12 points and hit three shots from downtown.
With the score tied at 10, junior David Brown (Ardsley,
NY) hit a lay up to give Mercy an early lead.
Gunville extended that lead to four (17-13) after he completed a
fast break lay up with 11:52 remaining in the first half.
After three lead changes, Brown hit another lay up and then senior
guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) drained a
three-pointer to take a 27-23 lead with 4:24 remaining. The Penmen
(5-3) came right back and tied the game at 31 as time expired in
the first half.
The Mavericks (0-7) started the second half with a bucket by
McMullen and a trifecta by Gunville to go up by five (36-31).
Gerald Carter tied the game back up at 39, but once again the
Mavericks reclaimed the lead on a jumper by McMullen.
Southern New Hampshire went on an 8-0 run to take their biggest
lead of the game (seven) and force the Mavericks into comeback
mode. Now trailing 54-50 Gunville completed the rare four-point
play after being fouled on a three-point attempt to tie the game at
54 with 5:18 remaining.
With the game tied at 60, the Penmen went on a 7-0 run highlighted
by Stephen Wood who scored six of the points, leaving the Mavericks
with only 54 seconds to mount a comeback.
McMullen completed a three-point play on a strong drive into the
lane, but it wasn't enough as Southern New Hampshire notched the
win.
Wood led all scorers with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play in
the Caldwell Tournament against Felician on Friday, December 19 at
4 p.m.
