Mercy College Men's Basketball Setback by Dowling 63-42

OAKDALE, NY - Despite strong defensive efforts, the Mercy College men's basketball team was defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Dowling College on Saturday by a score of 63-42.

Junior guard David Brown (Ardsley, NY) notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. He shot 6-for-10 from the floor and added two steals. Senior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists. Sophomore guard Kortney Parker (Mount Vernon, NY) contributed with seven points and five boards.

The Golden Lions (2-4, 1-1 ECC) took an early 13-4 lead on three-pointers by John Merchant and Keith Nandin. The Mavericks (0-5, 0-2 ECC) scored eight of the next 11 points, highlighted by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) to cut the deficit to four points (16-12).

With 7:50 remaining in the first half, Mercy College got within one (19-18) after a lay up by Brown and two free throws by junior guard Jason Charles (Brooklyn, NY). The Mercy momentum was cut short on the ensuing possession when Nandin hit a shot from downtown. After a Mavericks' turnover, Sean Smith connected on a three-pointer to give the Golden Lions a seven point (25-18) cushion.

The Mavericks went into the intermission trailing 37-22.

Mercy College scored the first six points of the second half on two buckets by Brown and one by Marin to drop the lead down to nine (37-28). However, Merchant hit consecutive three-pointers, sandwiched by two free throws, to go by 17.

The Mavericks' defense forced 21 turnovers, but the offense couldn't muster a comeback as Dowling gained the victory.

Merchant hit six three-pointers and scored 20 points for Dowling.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, December 10 when they play host to ECC opponent C.W. Post at 7 p.m.
