PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team fell by a score of 104-70 to Pace University at the Pace Holiday Classic on Monday. Senior Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) registered a double-double as he led the Mavericks with game-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Pace (5-4) raced out to a 12-0 lead after the first 2:25 of the contest. Mercy College (0-10) scored the next seven points, getting a three-pointer from sophomore Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) and three points from sophomore Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY), but the Setters responded with another 12-0 run to go up 24-7.
The Mavericks chipped away and pulled within nine at 28-19 on a Marin jumper. That would be as close as they would get in the first half as Pace went into the break with a 43-33 advantage.
Gunville opened the second stanza with a three-pointer to trim the margin to seven, but a 13-3 spurt by Pace stretched the gap to 56-39. Mercy would come within 11 at 60-49 on another Marin jumper before the Setters pulled away over the final 13 minutes.
Marin hit 6-of-14 from the field and 9-of-13 at the free throw line, while tying a career-high with his 12 boards. Gunville finished with 17 points, connecting on four three-pointers.
Four Setters scored in double figures on the night. Carlos Howard and Ryan Woods netted 19 points each. Adrian Mills added 18 points and Callum Jones chipped in 17 points.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday at the Pace Holiday Classic when they take on UMass-Lowell at 4:00 p.m.
