LOWELL, MA - Senior Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) poured in 28 points, but the Mercy College men's basketball team fell by a score of 95-66 to Merrimack on day two of the UMass Lowell Tipoff Classic.
The first half went back and forth as the contest saw seven lead changes and five ties. After a sluggish start for both teams, Mercy got baskets from sophomore Kortney Parker (Mount Vernon, NY) and Marin to take a 4-0 lead. Merrimack answered with five points to take its first lead, but the Mavericks came right back with four straight points from senior Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) to regain the advantage at 8-5.
Mercy (0-2) would build its largest lead at 10-6 on a pair of free throws by junior Jason Charles (Brooklyn, NY), but the Warriors knotted the game at 10-10 with 12:35 left in the half. McMullen gave the Mavericks another lead at 14-12 with a layup before Merrimack went on a 9-2 run to pull ahead 21-16.
A Marin three-pointer stopped the spurt and the Mavericks responded to take a 23-21 edge. Their last lead came at 25-24 on a Marin layup at the 5:35 mark. Merrimack then outscored Mercy College 15-9 to take a 39-34 lead into the break.
Merrimack (2-0) opened the second half with an 11-0 outburst, seven points coming from Wayne Mack, to stretch the gap to 50-34. The surge was too much for the Mavericks to overcome despite 15 second frame points from Marin as the Warriors gradually pulled away, building their lead to as many as 39. Marin scored five points in a final 10-0 run to close out the game.
Marin finished the game 12-for-23 from the field, hitting a pair from beyond the arc, and also dished out four assists. McMullen added 13 points and senior Ed Wilson (New York, NY) chipped in 12 points.
Darin Mency led five Warriors in double-digits with 23 points. Darren Duncan netted 22 points and Mack finished with 16 for Merrimack.
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, November 22, at Bloomsburg. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
