LOWELL, MA - Host UMass Lowell defeated the Mercy College men's basketball team by a score of 71-48 on day one of its Tipoff Classic.
After the River Hawks (1-0) opened the game with a pair of three-pointers, senior Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) got the Mavericks on the scoreboard with a jumper. UMass Lowell then scored the next 19 points to open up a 25-2 lead with 10:34 left in the first half.
The Mavericks (0-1) went on an 8-0 run with four points coming from junior Jason Charles (Brooklyn, NY) to cut the gap to 25-10, but UMass Lowell closed out the half strong to take a 35-14 lead into the break.
The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second frame before the River Hawks got back-to-back three-pointers from Terrel Randle to build their largest lead of the game, 49-23.
Sophomore Jimmy Gunville's (Raynham, MA) three-pointer with 11:44 remaining got the Mavericks started on a 13-3 stretch that pulled them to within 16 at 52-36, but UMass Lowell answered with a 9-0 run to go back up by 25 at 61-36.
Sophomore Kortney Parker (Mount Vernon, NY) scored the next four points for Mercy on a free throw and a three-pointer, trimming the deficit to 61-40 with 2:59 to go. That would be as close as the Mavericks would get as the River Hawks went 8-for-8 at the free throw line to put it away down the stretch.
Gunville and Parker each scored nine points on the night to lead the Mavericks. Senior Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) and junior David Brown (Ardsley, NY) added seven points apiece, with McMullen pulling down seven rebounds.
UMass Lowell's Sean Romsek led all scorers with 18 points, while teammate Kyle Caiola added 15.
Mercy College will return to action at the UMass Lowell Tipoff Classic on Sunday versus Merrimack beginning at 6:00 p.m.
