Mercy College Men's Basketball Falls to Queens 79-62

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Four players reached double figures in scoring for the Mavericks, but it wasn't enough as the Mercy College men's basketball team was defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Queens College by a score of 79-62 on Wednesday.

Senior guard Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) shot 7-for-11 from the floor and totaled 16 points for the Mavericks. Sophomore guard Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) scored 14 points and added two steals. Sophomore guard Manny Garcia (Bronx, NY) contributed with 11 points while senior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) had 10 points.

The Knights (6-16, 4-9 ECC) went on a 14-0 run to start the game, highlighted by three-pointers by senior forward Mike Liander (Elmhurst, NY) and junior guard Khaleef Allicott (Brooklyn, NY).

The Mavericks (0-22, 0-13 ECC) scored 11 of the next 16 points to cut the deficit to 11 (19-8) with 11:56 remaining. The Knights responded and pushed their lead up to 16 after a dunk by junior forward Greg Tull (Amityville, NY).

The Blue & White finished the half by scoring six of the final eight points to get within 12 (40-28) at the break.

The Mavericks came out hot in the second half and cut the deficit to one point (47-46) by going on a 13-0 run. During the run, Garcia completed a three-point play, and McMullen and Marin each hit three-pointers.

The Knights pressed the lead back up to six points, but back-to-back buckets by McMullen brought the Mavericks within two points (52-50) with 10:20 remaining.

Down by just two points with 7:39 left on the clock, the Knights scored the next seven points to take a nine point lead. The Mavericks were able to cut the lead to six, but could get no closer as the Knights came away with the victory.

Allicott shot 8-for-12 from the floor and totaled 23 points. Liander added 18 points and 10 boards.

The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, February 14 at 3 p.m.
