Mavericks Drop Contest to No. 2 C.W. Post
BROOKVILLE, NY
- The Mercy College men's basketball team was
defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent C.W. Post by a
score of 87-43 on Saturday.
Senior guard Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) led
the Mavericks with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Sophomore guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) hit
three shots from downtown and totaled 13 points. Senior guard
Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) and sophomore guard
Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) each contributed with seven
points.
The Pioneers (18-0, 12-0 ECC) scored the game's first seven points,
but the Mavericks (0-21, 0-12 ECC) got on the board on Gunville's
first trifecta with 17:34 remaining in the first half.
C.W. Post went on a 14-2 run capped off with a jumper by senior
guard Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, NY) to take a
22-5 lead. The Mavericks trimmed the lead to 14 (30-16) after a
jumper by Wilson with 8:28 remaining.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 47-25 at the intermission.
In the second half, C.W. Post continued to build the lead as they
went on a 14-4 run highlighted by two three-pointers by Schmidt to
take a 74-38 advantage.
Schmidt finished with 15 points while junior guard Roberto
Macklin (Wappingers Falls, NY) scored 19 points and
grabbed nine boards.
The Mavericks shot 41.5 percent for the game while the Pioneers
shot 53 percent from the floor.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they play host to Queens
on Wednesday, February 11 at 7 p.m.
