Mavericks Fall at NYIT 74-51 in ECC Men's Basketball

OLD WESTBURY, NY - Host NYIT defeated the Mercy College men's basketball team by a score of 74-51 on Thursday in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Sophomore Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) led the Mavericks with 20 points as he hit 9-of-16 from the field and 2-of-3 at the free throw line. Senior Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) added 13 points and six rebounds for Mercy (0-18, 0-9 ECC)
NYIT (10-8, 5-4 ECC) led from start to finish, opening up a 14-6 gap after a Daniel Berg (Osteras, Norway) three-pointer with 13:02 left in the first half. The Mavericks would pull within four at 25-21 on a Manny Garcia (Bronx, NY) layup, but the Bears went on a 9-2 run to gain a double-digit margin before settling for a 34-26 lead at the break.
Mercy trailed 37-28 early in the second stanza after a Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) layup when the Bears put together another 15-6 spurt that stretched the lead to 52-34. NYIT increased the lead to as many as 30 at 72-42 with 5:12 remaining to put the game out of reach.
Mickell Vickers (Babylon, NY) led four Bears in double-digits with 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Anthony Clarke (Cambria Heights, NY) and Berg each added 11 points.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, January 31, when they host Molloy with a 3:30 p.m. tip-off.
