Purple Knights Pull Away to Top Mavericks 97-69 in ECC Men's Basketball

Justin McMullen

BRIDGEPORT, CT -  The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 97-69 decision at Bridgeport in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday.  Junior David Brown (Ardsley, NY) led four Mavericks in double-figures with 17 points, adding eight rebounds.

Brown went 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Seniors Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) and Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) scored 13 points each, with McMullen pulling down a team-high nine boards. Sophomore Manny Garcia (Bronx, NY) added 12 points.

Mercy (0-17, 0-8 ECC) built an 18-9 lead with 12:51 left in the first half with Brown scoring nine quick points. Bridgeport (11-5, 5-3 ECC) heated up though and put together a 31-8 run, capped by a Steve Martin (Philadelphia, PA) three-pointer, to erase the deficit and pull ahead 40-26 with 4:06 to go.  Mercy responded by scoring the final seven points of the frame to cut the margin to 40-33 at the break.

Two baskets from McMullen and another from Brown to open the second stanza extended the Mavericks' run to 13-0, closing the gap to just one point at 40-39, but Bridgeport stopped the rally with nine straight points to go up 49-39.

Mercy was able to pull within four at 54-50 on an Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) jumper with 12:08 remaining in the game, but the Purple Knights exploded for another 33-8 outburst to mount an 87-58 lead and put the contest out of reach.

The Mavericks shot 51 percent from the floor for the game, but Bridgeport posted a 69 percent mark in the second half to pull away.

Teairez Stennis (St. Louis, MO) and Dave Boykin (White Plains, NY) scored 25 points apiece for Bridgeport, while Martin added 18 points.

Mercy College will be back in action on Wednesday, January 28 at NYIT for a 7:15 p.m. tip-off.
