DOBBS FERRY, NY -  Four Mavericks scored in double-figures but it wasn't enough in a hard fought 73-67 defeat to visiting Concordia College in an East Coast Conference (ECC) men's basketball tilt on Wednesday. Junior David Brown (Ardsley, NY), senior Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) and sophomore Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) each scored 16 points, while senior Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) added 15 points for Mercy College (0-16, 0-7 ECC).

It was tight throughout and the contest saw three ties and two lead changes in the first four minutes. With the game tied at 6-6, the Mavericks went on a 9-3 spurt with four points from Marin to build their largest lead of the game at 15-9.

The two teams swapped leads five more times in the first half, with Mercy going up by as many as five at 27-22 on a Wilson jumper, but Concordia (5-12, 3-4 ECC) scored the final six points, including four from William Eason (Springfield, MA) to take a 28-27 advantage into the break.

The Clippers extended the run to 13-0 to build a 35-27 lead after a Samuel Batista (Carolina, Puerto Rico) three-pointer.  They stretched the margin to as many as 11 points three times, the last at 49-38 with 9:35 to go.

Mercy then went on a 10-2 run to pull within three at 51-48, getting three-pointers from Marin and Wilson. The Mavericks stayed within striking distance and trailed 63-59 with 2:10 left, but Concordia converted enough free throws, going 8-for-15 down the stretch to hold them off.

Brown went 7-for-11 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Marin was 5-for-11 from the floor, 5-for-6 at the charity stripe and picked up six steals.  The Mavericks forced 23 turnovers and gave the ball up only seven times.

Batista led Concordia with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-14 from the field, including three from long distance. Eason posted a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 20 boards, while Daniel Olsen (Stafford, CT) also registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, January 24, at Bridgeport. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
