DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team fell by a score of 87-48 at Queens College in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Monday. Senior Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) scored 15 points to lead the Mavericks and added seven rebounds.
Queens (4-11, 2-4 ECC) raced out to a 17-0 lead that Mercy (0-15, 0-6 ECC) could not recover from. Sophomore Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) netted a three-pointer for the Mavericks to end the drought.
After a basket by Mike Liander for the Knights, Gunville connected again from long-distance to pull Mercy within 13 at 19-6, but Queens answered with a 7-0 run. The Mavericks cut the deficit to 36-21 on a pair of free throws from Manny Garcia (Bronx, NY) before Queens stretched the margin back to 46-28 at the half.
Queens opened the second frame with another 15-3 run, capped by a Khalil McDonald jumper, to build a 61-31 lead with 13:08 remaining. Mercy was able to close the gap to 64-37 on a Marin bucket, but could pull no closer the rest of the way.
Marin went 6-for-12 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) and Garcia added seven points apiece for the Mavericks.
Liander registered a double-double for Queens with game-highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Khaleef Allicott also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
The Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, January 21, when they host Concordia in another ECC contest at 7 p.m.
