PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Mercy College men's basketball team fell by a score of 101-42 at Philadelphia University in a non-conference game on Sunday. Sophomore guard Kortney Parker (Mount Vernon, NY) led the Mavericks with 12 points.
Parker went 6-for-9 from the field for the Mavericks, adding team-highs of seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomores Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) and Desentrie Allen (Bridgeport, CT) chipped in eight points apiece.
Philadelphia University (8-2) led from wire to wire, scoring the first 13 points of the contest with eight coming from Russell Frederick. Mercy College (0-12) then went on a 7-2 run, capped by a Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) three-pointer, but the Rams responded with their own 15-2 spurt to open up a 30-9 lead with 10:33 left in the first half.
After a Parker jumper, Philadelphia University went on to outscore the Mavericks 22-7 over the final 9:54 to take a 52-18 advantage into the break. The Rams shot 65 percent from the field in the first frame, including 8-of-15 from three-point range.
Philadelphia University cooled off a bit in the second half, but not enough as the Rams outscored Mercy College 49-24 over the final 20 minutes to put it away.
Four Rams scored in double-digits, led by Frederick's game-high 24 points. He hit 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-9 behind the arc, and all four free throw attempts.
The Mavericks will resume East Coast Conference play when they travel to Queens College on Saturday, January 10, at 7:30 p.m.
