Mavericks Fall at Southern New Hampshire, 76-51 in Final Non-Conference Men's Basketball Game
MANCHESTER, NH - The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 76-51 decision at Southern New Hampshire in the final non-conference game of the season on Sunday. The Mavericks are now 3-9 on the year, while Southern New Hampshire upped its record to 5-6.
Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) recorded his second straight double-double and third of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds for the Mavericks. Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) added 13 points and three assists.
Southern New Hampshire's Gerald Carter led all players with 22 points and added seven rebounds. Sam Carey chipped in 20 points and also pulled down seven boards for the Penmen.
The two squads traded leads six times and the game saw three ties over the first 12 minutes. Carey put Southern New Hampshire ahead for good, 19-17 with a layup, and the Penmen built their lead to double-digits at the half, 33-23.
Southern New Hampshire stretched the margin to 36-23 early in the second frame before Mercy went on a 14-4 run, getting three-pointers from Wellington and junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) to cut the deficit to three at 40-37.
The Penmen answered with a 10-2 spurt to regain a double-digit margin, 50-39. Back-to-back layups from Flowers and freshman guard Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) pulled the Mavericks within seven at 50-43, but they could pull no closer the rest of the way.
The Mavericks will start the new year and resume East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday, January 5, when they host Adelphi at 3:00 p.m.
