Mercy College Men's Basketball Sinks Saint Anselm 64-60

MANCHESTER, NH - Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) and junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) scored 17 points each to lift the Mercy College men's basketball team to a 64-60 triumph over host Saint Anselm College on Saturday.  The Mavericks improve to 3-8 on the year with the win, while the Hawks fall to 5-5.

Wellington connected on five three-pointers on the night and dished out four assists, while Marin hit three from behind the arc and picked up three assists. Senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) registered a double-double, netting 13 points and pulling in 10 rebounds, seven on the offensive glass. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) chipped in seven points and grabbed 10 boards.

Junior Mitchell led Saint Anselm with 14 points off the bench and added five rebounds. Giovanni Carenza chipped in 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks.

Trailing 15-9, Mercy went on a 12-2 run, capped by a Wellington three-pointer, over a span of 4:16 to take a 21-17 lead.  The first half saw three ties from there and four more lead changes before Saint Anselm closed out the frame with a 7-0 spurt to take a 35-29 lead into the break.

The Hawks held a four-point edge, 37-33, early in the second half when Mercy erupted for a 16-3 outburst, getting seven points from Marin to build its largest lead of the contest, 49-40 with 13:08 remaining.  Saint Anselm answered with its own 11-2 run to knot the game at 51-51 with just under nine minutes to go.

The game saw two more ties, the last at 58-58, before the Mavericks took the lead for good on a Wellington layup with 5:19 left.  After a jumper by Guy gave Mercy a 62-58 advantage Chris Vetrano's layup pulled the Hawks to within two, but the Mavericks' defense held from there and a pair of Jordan free throws in the closing seconds put it away.

The Mavericks will return to action on Sunday, December 30, at Southern New Hampshire beginning at 1:00 p.m.
