Mercy Men's Basketball Stopped at Stonehill 86-62
NORTH EASTON, MA - The Mercy College men's basketball team fell by a score of 86-62 at the hands of host Stonehill in a non-conference game on Thursday. The Mavericks are now 2-7 overall, while the Skyhawks improved to 7-6 on the year.
Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) led Mercy with 16 points on 5-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and went 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) came off the bench to chip in 13 points, going 6-for-8 from the field.
Stonehill's Nick Smith led all players with 24 points on 9-of-13 from the field, including 6-of-9 behind the arc. A.J. Rudowitz added 10 points for the Skyhawks, which had 13 different players score in the game.
Freshman guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) gave Mercy an early 3-2 lead with a three-pointer, but Stonehill reeled off 19 straight points to open up a 21-3 margin midway through the first half. The Skyhawks built their lead to 24 at 36-12, but Mercy outscored Stonehill 8-4 to close out the half and cut the deficit to 40-20 at the break.
The Mavericks pulled within 18 at 42-24 early in the second frame on a jumper by Flowers before Stonehill exploded for a 26-10 run to build the largest lead of the game, 68-34, with 8:36 to go. Mercy put together a 15-5 run, capped by a Marin three-pointer, trimming the margin to 73-49 at the 4:46 mark, but the Mavericks could pull no closer the rest of the way.
Mercy will be back in action again on Saturday, December 22, at LeMoyne for another non-conference game beginning at 2:00 p.m.
