Mercy College Men's Basketball Defeated by NYIT 88-83
OLD WESTBURY, NY - Four Mavericks scored in double-digits, led by junior guard Michael Marin's (Flushing, NY) career-high 27 points, but the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped an 88-83 decision to host NYIT in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Wednesday. The Mavericks are now 2-6 overall and 2-3 in ECC action, while the Bears improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Marin hit 5-of-8 from behind the three-point arc, connecting on 9-of-14 overall from the field, and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) narrowly missed a double-double, netting a career-high 22 points and pulling in a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) added 15 points, and senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) chipped in 12 points and dished out a game-high eight assists.
Bryant Lassiter led all players in scoring, dropping in 29 points for NYIT. Andre Wright netted 20 points and grabbed eight boards.
After the lead traded hands six times in the opening minutes, the Bears built a 17-10 gap and stretched it to 26-15 on a Daniel Berg three-pointer with 12:16 left in the first half. They led by 11 again at 35-24 when the Mavericks went on a 12-2 run, capped by a Flowers jumper that cut the deficit to 37-36. NYIT answered with a 14-1 spurt to build its largest lead of the game at 14, before going into the break with a 53-42 advantage.
Mercy trimmed the margin to five early in the second stanza on a Wellington three-pointer, but NYIT went back up by 14 two more times, the last at 71-57 with 10:06 remaining in the contest. Trailing 87-76 with 2:37 to go, the Mavericks made one more run, scoring the next seven points and pulling within four on a Marin three-pointer, but could pull no closer.
The Mavericks will be off until Thursday, December 20, when they travel to Stonehill for a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 p.m.
