Mercy College Men's Basketball Falls to Concordia 72-50
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 72-50 decision at the hands of visiting Concordia College on Saturday. The Mavericks fall to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Clippers improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the league.
Senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) paced Mercy with 13 points and picked up seven rebounds. Freshman guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) netted 12 points, and senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) added nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Freshman forward Sean Walker (Bridgeport, CT) led Concordia with a game-high 21 points on 6-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-8 beyond the arc, and went 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Junior forward Dan Cunningham (Kingston, NY) registered a double-double for the Clippers, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 boards, while freshman center William Eason (Springfield, MA) pulled in a game-high 15 caroms to go with seven points and three blocks.
The Clippers led from start to finish, opening up a 16-2 gap with 12:55 left in the opening period. The Mavericks then went on a 13-2 run in which Gunville scored 12 points on four three-pointers, cutting the deficit to 18-15. Mercy trailed by six (25-19) at the 6:31 mark when Concordia went on a 15-5 run to close out the half and take a 40-24 lead into the break.
The Mavericks trimmed the margin to 40-30, scoring the first six points of the second stanza on a pair of three-pointers by senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY), but the Clippers exploded for another 24-2 run over the next 9:49, extending their lead to 64-32. Mercy outscored Concordia 16-6 over the final four minutes, but Concordia went away with the 72-50 decision.
Mercy will return to action on Wednesday, December 12, at NYIT for another ECC contest beginning at 7:30 p.m.
