Marin Buzzer Beater Lifts Mavericks Over Dowling 62-60 in ECC Men's Basketball

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) drained a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Mercy College men's basketball team a thrilling 62-60 triumph over visiting Dowling in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game on Wednesday.  The Mavericks improved to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in ECC action, while the Golden Lions fell to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) paced Mercy with 17 points and handed out two assists for the Mavericks. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) narrowly missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, and freshman guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) chipped in 12 points.

Both teams struggled on offense in the first half as Mercy shot hit just 7-of-32 (22 percent) from the field and Dowling made only 10-of-34 (29 percent). The Golden Lions built an eight-point lead at 19-11 with 6:58 to go in the first frame on a layup by Mike Hill. The Mavericks then went on an 8-2 spurt to pull within two at 21-19 before going into the break trailing 23-20.

The offenses heated up in the second half and Dowling stretched its lead to double-digits at 37-27 on a David Seagers jumper before the Mavericks got contributions from five different players in a 14-1 run to create a 41-38 edge. Mercy built its lead to as many as six on three different occasions, the last (55-49) on a pair of free throws by senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) with 4:29 to go.

Dowling went on a 9-2 spurt to regain the lead at 58-57 with just 23 seconds left.  Gunville then drilled a 25-foot three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to put the Mavericks back on top 60-58, but Genc Selimi answered with a layup on the other end for the Golden Lions to knot the contest at 60-60 with seven seconds to go.

Mercy took one more timeout to set up a play and Marin answered the call, getting his game-winning jumper off just before time expired.

Wellington went 5-for-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 behind the arc, and hit 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Jordan connected on 5-of-12 from the floor, and 6-of-8 at the charity stripe. Gunville was 4-for-8 from the field and 3-of-4 on free throws.

Hill paced the Golden Lions with 20 points and added six rebounds, while James St. Roberts registered a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Mavericks are back in action again on Saturday, December 8, when they host Concordia in another ECC contest at 3:00 p.m.
