New Haven Tops Mercy Men's Basketball 83-63

WEST HAVEN, CT - The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped an 83-63 decision at the hands of host New Haven in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Saturday, December 1. The Mavericks are now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the ECC, while the Chargers improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) paced Mercy in scoring for the second straight contest, netting 18 points. Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) added 14 points, and senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) contributed 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks opened an early lead as Marin and Wellington each hit three-pointers in the first five minutes. The Chargers then went on a 20-2 run to take a 24-10 lead that they would not relinquish. Mercy answered with its own 10-0 spurt, capped by a three-pointer from freshman guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) to pull within four.

A jumper from Flowers with 2:31 left in the half brought the Mavericks within two at 32-30, but New Haven closed out the period with an 11-2 run and took a 43-32 advantage into the break.

New Haven led 52-39 after a Flowers tip-in off a missed free throw when the Chargers put together another 19-7 spurt that gave them a 71-46 margin that would be too much to overcome.

Marin converted 7-of-14 from the field, and 2-of-4 at the free throw line. Wellington went 4-for-7 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from long range, and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the charity stripe.

New Haven's Tetrick Stonar led all players with 23 points on 10-of-16 from the field, going 3-for-7 beyond the arc. Darryl Greene added 16 points for the Chargers.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, December 5, when they host Dowling in their home opener beginning at 8:00 p.m.
