Mavericks Open ECC Men's Basketball Play with 79-73 Win at Queens
FLUSHING, NY - Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) registered a double-double, scoring a career-high 25 points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds, to lead the Mercy College men's basketball team to a 79-73 triumph at Queens College in its East Coast Conference (ECC) opener on Wednesday.
Marin connected on 7-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and hit 5-of-6 at the free throw line to help give first year head coach Tony Staffiere his first win for Mercy (1-3, 1-0 ECC). He also added three blocks and a pair of steals. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) and senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) added 20 points each for the Mavericks. Jordan hit 7-of-15 from the field and 6-of-8 at the free throw line, also pulling down eight boards. Wellington converted 6-of-11 from the floor, 3-of-6 from long distance, and 5-of-7 at the charity stripe, while picking up four steals.
Mike Liander led Queens (0-4, 0-2 ECC) with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Khaleef Allicott and Lamont Lans chipped in 18 points each for the Knights.
Despite shooting just 34.4 percent from the field in the first half, the Mavericks took a 31-28 edge into the break. They heated up in the second frame, hitting 59.3 percent (16-for-27) from the floor, including 4-of-6 behind the arc. For the game, Mercy shot 45.8 percent from the field, and drained 8-of-17 three-point attempts (47.1 percent).
The Mavericks will be back in action again on Saturday, December 1, when they travel to New Haven for another ECC contest, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
