Nyack Holds Off Second Half Surge by Mercy Men's Basketball, 58-54
NYACK, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team came back from an 11-point first half deficit, but Nyack used a late run to hold off the Mavericks, 58-54 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday. Mercy is now 0-3 on the season, while the Warriors improved to 1-2.
Mercy senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) led all players with 14 points, and sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) added 13 points and six rebounds for the Mavericks.
Nyack scored the first five points of the game before Mercy posted seven straight points to take an early 7-5 lead. The Warriors then outscored Mercy 14-3 over a span of 8:26 to build a nine-point lead at 19-10. They stretched the margin to 28-17 before settling for a 28-19 half-time lead after Jordan hit a jumper just before the break.
The Mavericks opened up the second half by scoring 10 straight points, getting four from Wellington, to go back ahead by one at 30-29. After the lead changed hands eight more times, Wellington hit a three-pointer that knotted the game at 47-47 with 4:50 to go, but Nyack hit four of its final six shots, and went 3-for-4 at the free throw line down the stretch to earn the victory.
Wellington went 4-for-9 from the field, hitting 2-of-3 from long range and 4-of-5 at the charity stripe. Jordan connected on 6-of-14 from the field. Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) added seven points, nine rebounds, and four steals for Mercy.
Brian Roberts recorded a double-double for Nyack, netting 12 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Mickell Vickers added 11 points for the Warriors.
