Mercy College Men's Basketball Defeated by Franklin Pierce 71-55 at DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic

COLCHESTER, VT - The Mercy College men's basketball team fell by a score of 71-55 to Franklin Pierce on Saturday at the DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic, hosted by Saint Michael's College.  Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, and added a game-high five assists for the Mavericks.

With the game tied early on at 5-5, Franklin Pierce (2-0) erupted for a 15-1 run to pull out to a 20-6 lead with 13:28 left in the first half.   Mercy (0-2) answered with a 7-0 run, getting four points from freshman Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) and a three-pointer from senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY), trimming the margin to seven at 20-13, but Franklin Pierce came right back and built its largest lead of the contest at 35-15, before going into the break ahead 37-23.

Trailing 45-28 with 16:06 remaining in the game, the Mavericks ran off nine straight points, capped by a Flowers layup to pull within eight at 45-37, but they would pull no closer the rest of the way.

Flowers hit 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe for Mercy. Gunville added 15 points on 6-of-14 from the field, including a trio of three-pointers. Junior Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) chipped in 11 points, five boards, and five assists.

Jeff Manchester netted a game-high 20 points for Franklin Pierce, while Timothy Munch added 17 points and six rebounds.

The Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday, November 20, with another non-conference game at Nyack, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
