Mavericks Fall to Iona 77-44 in Men's Basketball Exhibition
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) recorded 10 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high six steals, but the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 77-44 decision to Division I program Iona College in an exhibition game on Tuesday at the Hynes Athletics Center.
Flowers scored the first basket of the game, before Iona went on a 16-0 run over a span of 3:18. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) cut the deficit to 11 points, but the Gaels built their lead back up to 18 at 25-7 midway through the first half. The Mavericks trimmed the margin to 11 three more times in the first frame before going into the break down 40-23.
Mercy opened the second half by going on a 7-0 run, getting baskets from senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) and senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) around a three-pointer from junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) to pull within 10 at 40-30.
The Gaels answered with a 13-2 spurt to regain control at 53-32 with 12:34 to go. The Mavericks could pull no closer than 57-38 as Iona closed the game out by outscoring Mercy 20-6 over the final 9:32.
Wellington finished the contest with nine points, hitting 4-of-8 from the field, and picked up a pair of steals for Mercy. Jordan added eight points, four boards and two blocks.
Four Gaels scored in double-digits, led by Devon Clarke's 14 points. Dexter Gray added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Milan Prodanovic chipped in 11 points, and Kyle Camper contributed 10.
The Mavericks will open up regular season play on Friday, November 16, when they take on host St. Michael's at the DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic.
