Mercy Men's Basketball to Debut with Exhibition at Iona on November 6
Admission is FREE for pre-season tune-up between Mavericks and Gaels at 7:30 p.m.
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Maverick fans can get their first look at the Mercy College men's basketball team when they take on NCAA Division I program Iona College in an exhibition game on Tuesday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m. ADMISSION IS FREE for the game between the Mavericks and Gaels at the Hynes Athletics Center on Iona's campus in New Rochelle, NY.
Both programs' head coaches will be making their debuts on Tuesday night. Mercy's Tony Staffiere was an assistant coach with the women's basketball team last season, helping that squad to a seven-win improvement. He will look to get a similar result with the men's team this year, as they return five seniors, four regular senior starters, and five players total that started 13 games or more.
Seniors Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) and Victor Sidberry (Bronx, NY) will handle the ball again and can knock down the three-pointer. Senior Paul Flowers (New York, NY) was among the nation's best in steals (2.6 spg) last year and sophomore Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) is arguably one of the most athletic players in the region. Senior Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) is a presence in the paint and junior Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) will also contribute.
First year Head Coach Kevin Willard takes over at Iona this year after serving the previous six seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at Louisville under Rick Pitino. Willard and the Gaels are looking to bounce back after a down season last year for the perennial Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contenders.
