Purple Knights Defeat Mercy Men's Basketball 84-63 in Season Finale
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Mercy College men's basketball team was defeated on Saturday at Bridgeport by a score of 84-63 in its final game of the season. The Mavericks' finish the year at 8-19 overall and 7-13 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, making a three-game improvement over last season in both columns.
Freshman guard Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) led the Mavericks in scoring with 16 points by shooting 8-of-9 from the field. Senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) registered 14 points and grabbed nine boards. Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Purple Knights built a 12-6 lead early on, but the Mavericks closed the gap to four (16-12) when Guy connected on a lay-up with 9:50 remaining in the half. Bridgeport scored the next six points, three coming on a drive by Quentin Martin who was fouled and made the free throw, to extend the Purple Knights lead to 22-12.
Down by nine (29-20), the Mavericks rallied with a three-pointer by senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY), two free throws by guard Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) and then a trifecta from McMullen to get within a point, 29-28. Mercy went into halftime trailing 36-30.

The Purple Knights came out of the locker room by hitting three consecutive shots from downtown to go up 45-32 with 17:52 remaining. Teairez Stennis hit the final three-pointer in that trio and then went on to score 16 of the next 18 Bridgeport points.
Stennis continued his sharp shooting and hit another three-pointer with 15:38 remaining to extend Bridgeport's lead to 55-36. He scored 26 points of his game-high 31 points in the second half.
The Mavericks shot 45.7 percent in the second half, but the Purple Knights were lights-out by hitting 18-of-30 shots from the floor (60 percent).
Mercy out rebounded Bridgeport 36 to 29. Littlejohn and Martin each scored 12 points for the Purple Knights.
Wellington led the team in scoring this season with 12.3 points per game and in assists with 2.1 per game. Flowers led the team in rebounding with 7.4 per game and in steals with 66 for the year.
